278 Objections to Jelson Development

By the stipulated closing date for comments and objections for the Ratcliffe Road / Peers Way/ Preston Way proposal, 278 objections had been submitted. This is a significant number from a relatively small village.

Some of the consultee comments were interesting, and indeed, critical, of the Development Statement submitted by Jelson Ltd.

For example, Leicestershire County Council's  Director of Environment and Transport stated "The Local Highway Authority does not consider that the application as submitted fully assesses the highway impact of the proposed development and further information is required as set out in this response. Without this information the Local Highway Authority is unable to provide final highway advice on this application."

Blaby District Council's Active Transport Officer highlighted issues concerning the sustainable development aspects of the plan, especially how active transport objectives might be achieved: "It is imperative that necessary Active Travel infrastructure is planned and embedded from the outset, however there is limited reference to either walking or cycling in the DAS, and no mention of wheeling or similarly constrained travel options, with the consequence that if Active Travel is not prioritised from the outset through the installation of high-quality infrastructure in combination with behaviour change interventions, this development is likely to become unnecessarily car-dependent.

While the Travel Plan states that it will “deliver long-term commitment to changing travel habits by minimising the percentage of journeys to and from the development made by single occupancy cars, and maximise the proportion of trips to the development made by public transport, by car share, on foot and by cycle” there is no reference in the Planning Policy and Design Guidance to LTN1/20 or other relevant Active Travel policies, and makes no reference to any targets, notably the Governments stated targets for active journeys."

Objections Past 100 Mark

Objections about the Peers Way / Preston Way / Ratcliffe Drive development have reached the 100 mark as of the 26th June, 111 in fact. The proposal has only three supporter's thus far. Evidence is building that the local community is very unhappy about the Planning Statement and what's in it. That's certainly the view we are getting on the street. The access issue (via Daultry Road) is a major concern, especially as it so close to the local children's playground situated along Preston Way.
